The road we take.
South Carolina trial lawyer Peter Wilborn rides too, and he launched mybikelaw (first as scbikelaw) to combine his passion for cycling with his legal work at Derfner, Altman and Wilborn in Charleston. He'd been representing cyclists and cycling groups since 2000, but it was more than adding a specialty to his practice. Years earlier, Peter had a bike tragedy in his own family. With mybikelaw, Peter's aim was - and is - to be a resource to other riders and their families.
From the start, calls and referrals have come from friends met in cycling clubs and bike shops, and from advocates for better bicycling conditions, including the Palmetto Cycling Coalition, Charleston Moves, the Greenville Spinners Bike Club and the League of American Bicyclists.
The mybikelaw caseload continues to grow exponentially. In 2008, trial lawyer and cyclist Ann Groninger of Patterson Harkavy LLP joined mybikelaw.com to bring legal services to cyclists in North Carolina.
mybikelaw is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of cyclists in the Carolinas, and beyond. We are advocates for bicycle safety, and stand up for cyclists' rights on the roads and in court.
Whenever possible, mybikelaw will provide no-cost legal advice and service to families who have suffered a fatal bike accident. Both Ann and Peter are partners in firms that are AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell - the highest national rating for legal ability and ethical standards. In part because of the bicycle advocacy work, DAW (Peter's firm) was recognized nationally in 2007 with a Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association.
We dedicate a portion of our practice to providing pro bono legal advice to school groups, cycling clubs and teams - about insurance, organizational structure, advocacy efforts, bicycle safety and more. Peter has earned certification as a safety instructor from the League of American Bicyclists, and he is available to teach bicycle safety to groups. In addition, mybikelaw can provide training programs for law enforcement personnel.
